Fixes #886

Cause

run_strips dispatched work to rayon's global pool whenever there were at least 4 strips, including when called from the cpal audio callback. That thread is not a rayon worker, so it blocks on a latch until the shared pool, which also runs bounces, freeze and previews, finishes the work, causing dropouts.

Fix

run_strips now takes the parallel path only when the caller is not the audio thread. The audio thread processes its strips serially on its own thread. Pool workers are always marked as not the audio thread.

Verified

  • Regression test audio_thread_tests::the_audio_thread_never_hands_strips_to_the_rayon_pool: fails on main without the fix and passes with it (cargo test -p soundcraft-mix the_audio_thread_never_hands_strips_to_the_rayon_pool).
  • cargo xtask ci passes.

Not changed

I did not add a dedicated realtime pool, so offline rendering keeps using the global rayon pool. The wasm run_strips and the H.264 decoder's pool are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • On native platforms, audio-thread requests process strips directly on the audio thread rather than dispatching them to parallel workers. Requests from other threads continue to use parallel processing for four or more strips, while smaller workloads are handled by the requesting thread.

Walkthrough

run_strips uses Rayon for workloads of at least four strips only when the caller is not the audio thread. Rayon workers are marked as non-audio threads. Native tests verify execution behavior and return errors for missing strip work or a render-thread panic.

Changes: Strip execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Audio-thread execution and validation
crates/mix/src/threads.rs
run_strips processes strips serially when the caller is the audio thread. For qualifying calls from other callers, Rayon workers are marked as non-audio threads. Native tests check worker marking, confirm that audio-thread calls do not run strips on Rayon workers, and report missing strip work or a render-thread panic.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/mix/src/lib.rs: run_strips no longer dispatches work to Rayon when called on the audio thread; that call now falls through to the serial path. Calls from other threads still use Rayon when there are at least four strips.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/mix/src/lib.rs: The existing test assertions still check audio-thread marking for strip jobs. A new test asserts that an audio-thread call with eight jobs runs none of them on Rayon workers.

Explanation

The title states the main change: strips are rendered serially on the audio thread rather than through rayon. The raw summary confirms that run_strips skips rayon for four or more strips on the audio thread, and the objectives describe the same change, so the title matches the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #886 requires that the audio callback not block on rayon's shared global pool when it renders at least four strips. The whole-PR diff from the merge base to head changes run_strips in crates/mix/src/threads.rs. The new condition is work.len() >= 4 && !on_audio_thread(). The audio thread therefore renders its strips serially on its own thread. This is the first fix option named in #886. Pool workers run as_audio_thread(false, ...), so they are never marked as the audio thread. The wasm run_strips is unchanged. Offline rendering still uses the global pool, as the PR description states. The #886 line references (crates/mix/src/lib.rs:1283-1295) are stale. The current code is in threads.rs. The regression test audio_thread_tests::the_audio_thread_never_hands_strips_to_the_rayon_pool marks a spawned thread as the audio thread, runs run_strips on 8 strips, and asserts that no strip sees rayon::current_thread_index() as Some. Without the fix, the parallel path sends these strips to pool workers, so the test fails. With the fix, the count is 0. I did not run the test or cargo xtask ci. This verdict relies on the diff and test code.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff for crates/mix/src/threads.rs contains the #886 fix, the regression test, and test support changes. The added and removed line counts (+26/-10) match the AI summary for that file. The run_strips change implements #886 directly. The new regression test verifies it. The #[cfg(test)] to #[cfg(all(test, not(target_arch = "wasm32")))] change is needed because the module uses rayon and the native run_strips. The helper seen_by_strips now returns Result so that a missing strip or a panicked render thread is reported. The existing strips_rendered_for_the_audio_thread_count_as_the_audio_thread_and_only_then assertions now compare against the expected vectors. These edits support the audio-thread tests and do not change behavior outside them. No wasm run_strips, H.264 decoder pool, or public declaration changes appear in the diff. The AI summary lists threads.rs as the only changed file. I did not independently confirm the absence of changes in other files, so this verdict relies on the diff of threads.rs and that summary.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the head of the diff: strips are rendered serially on the audio thread instead of through rayon. The comment explains that the audio thread is not a rayon worker, so a parallel iterator would park it on a latch waiting for the shared pool, which is also busy with offline work; a real-time thread must not wait on a pool it does not control. Rendering the strips itself keeps the audio callback deadline in its own hands. Other threads still use par_iter_mut when there are four or more strips. The cost is that with many strips the audio thread does all the work, which risks underruns on a slow machine, so a measurement of the callback time on a project with many strips is the proof. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Re-reviewed the complete PR change at 26cafa85bb8a0011bb368ae5bd1034ae8193a4b9, including the playback callback's thread marking and the native/wasm strip paths. No blocking code findings remain.

The marked audio callback now renders strips on its own thread instead of waiting on the shared Rayon pool. Non-audio callers retain the parallel path for four or more strips. The maintainer fixes keep the native-only tests out of wasm builds and make the test helper return errors without suppressing Clippy; the assertions now check all 64 expected results.

Validation on the final source:

  • cargo test -p soundcraft-mix --lib --locked: 51 passed.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --keep-going -- -D warnings: passed.
  • cargo check -p soundcraft-mix --tests --target wasm32-unknown-unknown --locked: passed.
  • Workspace formatting and git diff --check: passed.
  • Focused source regression: restoring the previous Rayon dispatch fails the callback test with 8 pool jobs rather than 0; the fixed implementation passes. The wasm source fails to compile before the target guard and compiles after it.
  • Current-head CI passed all cargo xtask ci stages: fmt, Clippy, tests, doctests, assets, layers and wasm. CodeRabbit completed its review of this head, and the reported wasm finding is resolved.

This validates removal of the shared-pool wait. Physical-device callback headroom for heavy sessions was not measured.

Merged as 76cc2ae after re-review and passing current-head CI. The maintainer fixes exclude the Rayon/thread tests from wasm and remove the test helper’s unchecked unwraps without suppressing lint rules. All 51 mix tests, workspace Clippy, wasm test-target compilation, and the full GitHub cargo xtask ci gate passed. The shared-pool-wait fix is validated; callback headroom on physical devices was not measured.
